Utada Hikaru – Beautiful World

Beautiful World
Utada Hikaru – Beautiful World

Beautiful World by Utada Hikaru is the theme song of the new Rebuild of Evangelion movie. I personally think that it’s her best and most awesome song ever, but maybe the relationship to Evangelion is clouding my judgement. I fell in love with this song after watching the movie trailer on YouTube. Hikki performed this song live on yesterday’s Music Station. I translated the lyrics, available here. Why do I always start translating things when my exams draw close? Sigh.

YouTube video embedded after the break.

Rebuilt is showing in theatres here now, one of my colleagues who just watched it say its fantastic. Hope to catch it soon myself.

I wonder if they will screen this in Singapore, considering the wave of anime like Tokikake and Brave Story showing recently.

  2. twilight says:

IIRC, the full version of this PV has not yet been released. Anyways, I agree that it’s a great song and fits the movie quite nicely.

  3. Deranged says:

When I first heard the song, I was quite surprised to hear it was going to be the Evangelion theme, but then after seeing the trailers I was quite surprised at how well it actually fit….

  4. Aesir says:

awesome indeed. i’ve been looping this so many times the counter on my itunes is gona break 2k soon

  5. Kurogane says:

    >>Why do I always start translating things when my exams draw close?

    At least it’s constructive procastination.

The song isn’t bad, but it’s not my favourite Utada song, which still belongs to Deep River.

  6. holybell84 says:

What is the difference between the movie vers and the original series?

  7. Hinano says:

I love the single, but for some reason I like Kiss & Cry more than this XD
THanks for the lyrics though, I do like both songs..

Only thing is that video is terrible! Even I could make a better trailer, Don’t they know repeating footage annoys the viewer XP

    P.S. Post Kiss & Cry Lyrics *w*!

  8. hitoshura says:

I still feel that COLORS is utada’s best song… hmmm

  9. 0rion says:

Wow, very nice. Sounds like a surprisingly good song, coming from Utada Hikaru.

  10. miyamiya says:

@holybell84: You can probably wiki the Rebuild of Eva and find out. But I’ll say it anyway. 4 movies retelling the original series with the first 3 based on the series and the 4th with a new conclusion.

Now I’m deciding between buying the Kara no Kyoukai dvds or this when they come out… maybe I’ll just buy both movie series.

But the PV for Eva Rebuild sure is good… only thing bothering me is I can’t seem to recall seeing Asuka in it…

  11. LianYL says:

Thanks for saving me the trouble of translating it, time to leech.

  12. hound297 says:

thanks … save me the trouble of searching for the lyrics

  13. chappy says:

@miyamiya: I believe Asuka isn’t in this 1st movie. Wiki states that this movie follows the story from episode 1 through 6.

Well, considering the nature of this film, regardless of it’s popularity, it’s safe to say that this movie, most definitely will NOT be shown in Singapore’s theaters.

Singapore, with it’s “anime = cartoon = younger target audience” mentality, this show will not be able to make it past the local film censors and even if it did, it’ll probably be slapped with a big “Restricted Audience” (R21) sign, allowing only those above the age of 21 to be entitled to watch it.

Ghost in the Shell, the 1st movie, was shown in Singapore about 11yrs ago, in 1996 or 1997, with R21 rating, the 1st time I’ve ever heard of an animated film with such a rating. Even with the popularity of Ghost in the Shell, it’s 2nd movie, Innocence, didn’t make it to the big screen here. I’m not even sure if Studio Ghibli’s latest film, Gedo Senki, made it to the big screen in Singapore.

So, don’t expect too much. I’ll be watching it IF it ever reaches here, but I won’t keep my hopes up.

p.s. I believe the youtube video above is fanmade. Not an actual PV.

  14. miyamiya says:

Yes, after thinking about it, it’s obvious Asuka won’t be featured in the trailer for the 1st movie.

And I agree we may not be fortunate enough to see Ayanami Rei’s nipples in Singapore cinema.

As for the PV. I agree it is fanmade, but almost 99% is from the actual PV with just a few screenshots changed/edited.

Here’s the link to the actual full commercial PV

Actually u can find it after a few searches on youtube

  16. aloo says:

    so much for democratic singapore.
BOFC should know better that anime is not just for kids.
anime as good as eva should be shown in all its glory, without censors.

Hey, showing women’s nipples is unlikely to result in moral collapse of sg citizens overnight. bah!

  17. DarkMirage says:

Anyway, it’s not up to the government to decide whether Eva gets shown in Singapore.

It’s more like up till Cathay’s recent experiment with TokiKake, Brave Story and Paprika, no cinema was willing to take the commercial risk.

Censorship isn’t a problem… 300 went through fine didn’t it? It’s about money. And GAINAX has been known to be greedy. It took a long time for End of Eva to be licensed in America because GAINAX was asking for like bajillion tons of gold for the DVD rights.

Stop blaming the government for everything. =_=

Utada Hikaru performing Beautiful World Live in HEY! HEY! HEY!

    *takes time to load..

i think it’s only a matter of time before eva reaches singapore. Unless someone calls cathay to pick this up fast, or we have to wait around 10 months or so..T_T

  19. animeking says:

    o_o;; I think I just had an orgasm….

  20. miyamiya says:

Hmm I think there was some nudity in Paprika. Did they show Paprika uncensored in Cathay here? I didn’t watch it though. Could be a good sign if they did.

  21. double says:

The Rebuild of Evangelion’s 1st movie is awesome. Especially towards the end of the movie when the movie’s graphics start to get better and better.

I can’t wait for the next movie ^^

  26. Flick says:

I’m definitely going to have to agree with you about Beautiful World being the most awesome (ever) song by Utada Hikaru! I also heard it when watching the ‘Rebuilt of Evangelion’ video on Veoh and really liked it, but now that I’m listening to the full song, I love it even more! :) Thanks for the lyrics!

  27. pink_sakura82 says:

I fell in love this song the first time I heard it from Music Station. ‘Beautiful World’ is Utada Hikaru’s most awesome song to date! I think it perfectly suits the mood of the new ‘Rebuilt of Evangelion’ anime. This song too is currently making my Winamp go crazy! (Too much repeating makes it go crazy. I s’pose. :P)

  28. NinewingedTurkey says:

Wow what a sad song!! My favourite of hers. She really is amazing….

  29. PiPi says:

    re: reply 13 from

Errr… do you not know that “Paprika” was shown in the Cathay Cinemas a few months back? Along with Brave Story????

I do not hope much from Singapore threathers but, lets not slack them off too much.

“ghost in the shell” was release back when Singapore first started their R21 ratings, and with that in mind, everything then was subjected to that rating. Very few stuff passed.

As for the recent Studio Ghibli Flim, it wasnt shown because it wasn’t an oringal creation by Hayao Miyazaki. It was done by his son with him only over seeing the project. And with the sales of ‘the cat returns’, Singapore Cinemas didn’t find the point to bring the anime here. Unlike ‘Howel’s moving Castle’ which was done orignally buy Hayao Miyazaki.

  30. Naruru says:

    Lawl

well yeah this is (i’d have to agree) Utada’s best song :D
and i’d also have to say that the owner(s) of this site really like the mealoncholy oh Suzumiya Haruhi XD

    meh

neway thxx so much for the lyrics :D

    and D: for singapore.

but i live in australia, therefore anime films are never shown in theatres :l.

  31. Haesslich says:

Why do I always get the sinking feeling that Beautiful World’s lyrics are directed at Shinji by one of the male cast, especially with the ‘boku’ in there?

  32. Gibson Ella says:
