Code Geass episode 5 reminds me of Full Metal Panic, except with a more sinister undertone and outrageous fashion senses. I quite like the blend of comedy and tragedy that’s playing out, and the fan-baiting that goes on is so honestly blatant that one can’t help but find it oddly charming. Bravo.
“Lelouch, am I doing it right?”
I shall not go into the details of this episode because on the whole the plot is rather standard Code Geass fare when it takes a break from the fighting: i.e. Lelouch’s secret operation is about to be have its cover hilariously blown by an unforeseen comedic moment in school and it’s up to him and some quick thinking to save the day.
Instead, I shall talk about something I rarely talk about in a blog entry: What I like about this episode.
1. Lelouch and Suzaku’s reunion
I thought this scene was quite well done in the way it contrasts the cynical narrative voices of the Lelouch and Suzaku with their jarringly cheerful reunion. The back and fro flashback narration and the abrupt switch in tones form a nice piece of storyboarding and directing.
2. Fanservices
This episode has tons of fanservice. It’s a cheap trick but somehow I fell for it. I think it’s pretty cute and hilarious, particularly the animal(?) costume that Kallen has to wear to hide her identity.

I feel all dirty and ashamed for taking those screencaps and captioning them, but I guess it’s part of the job description of a anime blog whore. I hope my grandchildren won’t be reading this.
3. The Twist
These scenes always happen on the rooftop
I found the plot twist at the end of the episode rather delightful and clever, if somewhat illogical. I won’t spoil it, but it involves the new Governor of Area 11. Lelouch is in some serious trouble! :O

Oh great. I’m talking like a huge fanboy. Sheesh. Oh well. At least there’s no yao…oh wait. Shit.
So Suzaku is Kyon and Zino is Itsuki
Time to kill myself with hydrogen sulphide.
On another note, I sort of pity Rolo. Lelouch is using him like a boy toy and it won’t be long now before he is betrayed by his confused feelings for his “brother”… Oh the pains of teenage infatuation.
“Am I gay? :(“
There is one thing that I didn’t really like about this episode, though. Lelouch discovers Villetta’s secret fling with Ougi and immediately uses it to blackmail her into going turncoat. The jump from discovery to action takes all of 3 seconds and I find that sudden transition slightly disconcerting.
