Code Geass R2 — Episode 12

Code Geass R2
The new Claymore

This is the most awesome Code Geass episode in the second season so far. No kidding. It has comedy, tension, revelations, drama, reunions, heart-warming moments and a cliffhanger all packaged into one convenient 24-minute episode. It just goes to show that the series only works when it takes itself half seriously.

Summary

Code Geass R2
Random fanservice never gets old

Milly is graduating from the academy and decides to hold a special event as her last act as the student council president. It involves silly-looking hats, Lelouch getting chased by the entire school’s population, and Sayako the super maid ninja.

Code Geass R2
Where do the spotlights come from? I don’t know

Yes that’s right, Sayako is apparently a fricking ninja, for real, belonging to the Shinozaki-ryuu. Her real profession is being a bad ass bodyguard, which was the reason why she was hired by the Ashford family. This explains a lot.

Code Geass R2
Sayako’s l33t ninja skillz

During Lelouch’s trip to China, Sayako was instructed to help manage his personal relationships in his place. This was apparently a terrible idea, because she managed to hit on every single girl in the school and arranged for hourly dates with different girls, which Lelouch must now attend to.

Code Geass R2
Lelouch’s schedule is the envy of his peers

And not only that, he also has to fly to China in Shinkirou in between dates to meet politicians and shake hands. This means that Shinkirou probably has a cruise speed that is higher than a Boeing 747’s.

Code Geass R2
Oh Xingke, you tool

Shirley is seriously pissed off at Lelouch’s new playboy personality. Add that to Milly’s special event: Hilarity of colossal proportion ensues.

Code Geass R2
I like her new hair style

Meanwhile, Cornelia makes a reappearance. She is out to seek vengeance against the powers of Geass that took her sister’s life, and her search has led her to the secret research facility known as the Temple.

Code Geass R2
Technically, a map only needs around four to six colours

The rest of the Britannia family on the other hand is busy plotting a land grab on the fragmented Chinese Federation through gunboat diplomacy.

Thoughts

This episode is brilliant because it is a synthesis of everything that makes Code Geass great. The battle of tactics between Lelouch and Milly is almost a self-parody of the series. And despite being a largely light-hearted episode, it also manages to squeeze in enough foreshadowing and short snippets to set the audience up for the next great Mass Emo Kids Event.

Hint: It involves Shirley and Mr. Orange’s new power. I foresee great tragedies ahead.

  2. random hero says:

“I just realized Zino had plaids, wtf”

they look more like rats tails to me

and why do the hats look like arses? (heh heh asshats)

  3. SnooSnoo says:

Your reviews cracks me up as always. Now just a few more hours till Eclipse releases the subbed version.

  4. Badx says:

That girl in the second Ashford Acamedy girls screencap, looks like Nunnally’s attendant…

  5. Proteus says:

You know, I think Geass has done better at this same gig before, even this same season. But I guess I’m just supposed to laugh mindlessly and post some other…stuff.

  6. Shadow says:

Proteus: do us all a favor and shut up. If you look to find something wrong with any anime series you WILL find something. With DM I don’t mind because he makes valid points and backs them up (this is also his blog). You, however, just complain. If you don’t like it don’t watch it, and for god’s sake stop wasting everyone’s time by posting that shit. Now if you want to make an intelligent comment, please, by all means do so.

Badx: do you mean the one one the top left? Because if you do you’re right, she does. At least a little.

  7. Camario says:

Wasn’t expecting much, since I’ve had problems with R2 lately…so the quality of the comedy varied, but it did entertain me enough at the end of the day.

Liked Sayoko’s “ninja” moves and how she used them to get Lelouch out of the “pinch”…mostly Milly’s fault, but setting up a million dates didn’t exactly help.

Shirley got some love, but I can’t shake the feeling this is just paving the way for her exit, even if she doesn’t die. Lelou’s too confused, too many things on his mind, and she’s too clingy…getting her lost memories back can’t possibly help that equation.

“It just goes to show that the series only works when it takes itself half seriously.”

Can’t agree with you there this time though. A pity…nah.

Yes, I didn’t like the China arc, as it turned out, but I don’t know if I could take the entire series being like this. The jokes would get old a bit too quickly, since there are only so many festivals Milly could pull off.

The key is to balance the ridiculous with the awesome and the actually informative. This episode was mostly for fun, and I can go with that, but the plot would move too slowly if it was all like this.Things like Turn 3, for example, were also lighthearted without having to spend too much time on running around and such.

Still, today’s cliffhanger was good, and I think the upcoming emo will work out nicely.

  8. Proteus says:

Shadow: Fine, fine. Don’t be so touchy, as if I were going to bother you for long.

Episode 6 in season one was better than this. People were complaining about the cat, all the way back then, but it seemed something much less extravagant and more natural. Episode 5 in season two was another celebration but it made sense as it was a follow-up of the failed Pizza Festival. This one? Everything came out of left field and stayed there. It didn’t click with me.

I can suppose DM’s got the right to go on about liking it for “self-parody”, you’re right about this being his blog, but that’s not what I want and can’t appreciate the things he says he likes in this episode. See? That’s all.

  9. GBABH says:

Mr Orange’s Geass looks funkier than the normal geasss!

  10. andreas says:

Why is his geass blue…it has to be orange

Also i dont think its that great against lelouche. in shirleys case it was unfortunate, but in most cases his geass doesnt have any lasting effect anyways. also he mostly kills ppl off after using it on them.

  11. Guner says:

It means everyone Lulu ever used will remember it. And who did fruit kill?

  12. machdude says:

    Wow… Just… wow…

Anya just drove the friggin Mordred into the school… That’s poor poor judgment especially since you aren’t suppose to kill Lulu. Imagine if she actually used the hadron cannons.

  13. Shadow says:

Proteus: Sorry for snapping. It annoys me when I see people complain, complain, complain, and do nothing to change why they are complaining. Even if it means not watching the series any more. I don’t know if it is you complaining all the time, I didn’t take the time to memorize all the names of those who do. And I do understand what your saying.

  14. DarkMirage says:

    Proteus:

Yeah season one was better. But I did specifically say that this is the best episode in season two, which is not exactly a very high standard.

Either way, I’m just saying that Code Geass does better when it stops pretending to be Ghost in the Shell because it fails at political intricacy and excels primarily as a comedy tragedy about inter-personal relationships.

  15. blue says:

I actually prefer the serious episodes, no matter how flawed the strategies or politics, as opposed to the (rather) mindless school comedy ones. The core plot is to me still the most interesting part of the show. Or perhaps it’s just that I found this particular school episode too random (dates with 108 girls, wtf Sayoko) coupled with my terrible bias against Shirley, lol. Anyway the foreshadowing parts neatly did the job, and I anticipate the next ep.

Good entry as always, DM. :D Although isn’t the political intricacy supposed to be part of the show’s backbone?

  16. Cyle says:

Wow, I must say Anya has no common sense, smashing a her Mordred’s arm through the library window to capture Lelouch, but damn is she cute. And I’ve had enough of Shirley, Lelouch is planning on going steady with her? Orange-kun, please release Lelouch from the shackles of romance, and destroy Shirley, while you’re at it kill off Kalen aswell. I don’t mind if it’s with C.C but all those other girls annoy me.

  17. ComradeZero says:

nooooooooooo, dont u dare kill kallen, cycle, y u say that. by the way, how do u change your avatar.

  18. ComradeZero says:

since when did corelia gun he a blade?

  19. Lyzander says:

Happy to see Shirley getting some love… Although alas, it would certainly seem its only as a setup for her exit.

Certainly a good episode. Looking forwards to the next one & corresponding blog entry.

  20. Bobo the Enraged says:

So, a Geass canceler aye, does this mean Lelouch can geass Shirley again?

Also, seems like a good idea now, the whole, not geassing Xing Ke into accepting the Tian Zi’s marriage to a Jap. Stupid, ponytail man.

Also, what’s up with the room of people with the Britanian Royalty? One of them was the knight of one, sure, but are the rest of the new characters also Royalty?

  21. Enigma says:

lol… this was quite an enjoyable episode…XD and best part is cornelia is back!! w00t!

  22. Upcom says:

Hurrah for Cornelia. She just throws entirely new things into an already volatile plot.

  23. Amnestic says:

“I like her new hair style”

Couldn’t agree more. New Cornelia is now taking one of my top spots for beautiful geass ladies ;o

“So, a Geass canceler aye, does this mean Lelouch can geass Shirley again? ”

It had the scene with all the brain patterns reverting themselves to normal, so I’d assume so, though he has to actually get a chance to do that first.

And DM, I’m surprised you didn’t screencap the picture of Anya in the hallway getting oggled by every single guy there. Loligoodness for all. (She doesn’t hold a lolicandle to Kaguya though)

  24. dokodemo says:

has it never occurred to saeko that lelouch is actually an idiot when it comes to sports…= =?? lulu couldn’t even outrun mirei…so why would she be doing flips and getting all 10s from the judges…she’s not a good kagebunshin= =…i’d definitely fire her if i was lulu…

  25. Amnestic says:

“she’s not a good kunoichi, in my opinion”

    Fixed that for you.

  26. machdude says:

Wait a sec… Is it just me or do I see a Librarian and… a teacher in Lelouch’s harem. Oh my god. It almost seems as if Lelouch can make his own dating sim because he’s got just about half the girls in the school, INCLUDING teachers. Sayoko really signed Lelouch up to MUCH more than he bargained for. I mean seriously. 108 girls on a 6 month waiting list? Since when has Lulu been this popular?

  27. tj han says:

Shirley’s hair is pretty normal what. Quite a lot of girls have it, it’s basically just tying the outer layer into a small tail to prevent it from looking too thick. Maybe the art is poorly detailed.

    DM NEEDS GIRLS!

  28. kamui says:

lol, ehm, I think the maid name is sayoko not sayako, DM

  29. Wrathos says:

Is it just me, or was this the first and only episode so far we’ve seen of Lelouch blushing?

I say this b/c even when Kallen was right on top of him, or C.C. outright striping to her undies (last episode) he doesn’t bat an eyelash…

    What’s going on here?

  30. andreas says:

If the geass canceler cancels all geass the biggest problem won’t be that lelouche’s geass gets cancele. But the empeor’s geass on the school will get canceled as well and everyone will remember abaout nunally and such.

So basicaly suzaku will know that lelouche has his memories back, no matter what lelouche does.

Also ppl will have to ask themselves wth Lelouche’s sister is a princess. I still dont rly get why Kallen hasn’t asked him that. As far as i know she still remembers Nunally (as seen in this episode) since her memory wasnt altered but she doesn’t know that lelouche is a prince. Why didn’t she comment on his sister being introduced as a princess?
    Same goes for Sayoko…

  31. Rololita says:

“This episode is brilliant because it is a synthesis of everything that makes Code Geass great. The battle of tactics between Lelouch and Milly is almost a self-parody of the series. And despite being a largely light-hearted episode, it also manages to squeeze in enough foreshadowing and short snippets to set the audience up for the next great Mass Emo Kids Event”

That’s so true! I couldn’t have said it better. DM your comments are just SPOT ON! この感じです。

    …and…”C.C. was here?” ROFL…She’s no where…is it the first time? I don’t coun’t, but…she’s usually around.

  32. Sabu113 says:

Great episode because it felt so complete. Still I agree with blue. Geass used to have an amazing core plot and it “serious” episodes were so much fun to watch. Hopefully the quality of this episode will continue over into the next one and the larger plot with geass.

I wonder if the reason people think r2 is so bad is because R1 was just an excellent anime.

Question… didn’t Shirley and Lelouch really resolve the issue last season before he geassed her? She had come to terms with it after Mao threatened…. Don’t know.

  33. N3O4 says:

    @Rololita: pizza
@Sabu: I suppose, but that doesn’t change the fact that Lelouch erased her memories against her wishes. anyway, she doesn’t seem to be brandishing any sharp objects, so i guess nothing too much will come out of it

I find it very interesting how Shirley seems to get her mind screwed around with by the characters

  34. Hei says:

    Where’s my wife C.C. :[[

  35. blue says:

Wrathos: Yeah, that’s pretty much the main reason I didn’t really like the episode. Watching that scene with Shirley at the end made me feel like I was reading a bad and cheesy fanfic. I’m sure that what Lyzander said was correct (“Happy to see Shirley getting some love… Although alas, it would certainly seem its only as a setup for her exit.”) but I think they could have made it a bit more convincing! :P Ah well, next episode should be picking up the pace.

  36. Kuro says:

Damn! Sayoko set up Lelouch with the SAME number of wives his dad has.

He had a chance to match Charles’ harem, but he blew it…

  37. havelo says:

@Sabu: I think geAss concept changes here, its a really powerful hypnosis then, or the canceller was a new type of geass?
or it reachs its time limit ??

  38. SnooSnoo says:

Kuro: Exactly, Lelouch has been trying to beat the Emperor on military might and the research on Geass. Why doesn’t he try to win him in terms of harem?

  39. manga says:

Wrathos: Lelouch likes Shirley, it was obvious from the first season, therefore he blushes.

Kallen has a crush on Lelouch but he don´t answer her feelings, thus he doesn´t have to blush when she´s ontop of him :p

CC, well she is the immortal witch, a partner in crime and whatnot. But no lover, even though you can see some parts of these seasons that could mean that CC likes Lelouch.

    But just my thoughts.

In general I have to say lots of lulz from Sayako´s handling with Lelouchs personal life, but not so good when it came to being Lelouch… poor guy.

Quite fun to see the Knights of Round getting attention like that :)

Wonder what Nunally will do with Kallen or vice versa. Yet another person who will go to Ashford academy maybe :)

  40. blue says:

manga: I have to disagree, Lulu not blushing in that scene with Kallen could mean anything. I think it just means that they’re that comfortable around each other. And besides, he did better than that – he asked her to return with him when everything was over. As for C.C, one can say that there’s a lot of sexual tension between the two.

Sunrise wants to keep everyone guessing until the end, which is why the three girls get more relationship development at, well, separate times. Lulu *officially* getting with Shirley this early on probably means that it won’t last long. :/

  41. keith says:

@andreas: “Why is his geass blue…it has to be orange?”
Was it orange? It was red, I believe. But more importantly, I’d say I wouldn’t care much about it other than to help viewers distinguish which is which. After all, it’s not like the characters themselves (aside from Geass company, that is) could recognize which power is activated, if they are even aware or know of it.

    @Sabu:
I think we’re off to a much more complicated series now… I mean, the variety of Geass powers already presents a lot of possibilities and here we first get to see canceling… I believe they (including Lelouch) would get pretty messed up from now on, like “Could I Geass him again now?” and stuff like that. I don’t want to think too deeply about it, though, at least not yet.

  42. andreas says:

“Was it orange? It was red, I believe. But more importantly, I’d say I wouldn’t care much about it other than to help viewers distinguish which is which. After all, it’s not like the characters themselves (aside from Geass company, that is) could recognize which power is activated, if they are even aware or know of it.”

dude, you didnt get me. he’s ornage-kun man, his geass needs to be orange.
and yes the other geass’s are red.

anyways, da zero obviously collects a loli harem so he has no use for those gathered by sayoko :D

i’m still confused about wether or not Kallen knows lelouche is a prince. if she doesnt, she’s dumb like hell.
well the next ep will clear that up since it’ll probably contain the dialogue between kallen and nunnally.

  43. Amnestic says:

“i’m still confused about wether or not Kallen knows lelouche is a prince. if she doesnt, she’s dumb like hell.
well the next ep will clear that up since it’ll probably contain the dialogue between kallen and nunnally.”

It also begs the question of whether Kallen knows Lelouch is keeping his memory restoration under wraps at the moment. He *might* have told her about it and she *might* have worked it out on her own, but then again she might not, which could possibly bring a swift and unfortunate end to Lelouch staying at Ashford. Probably unlikely to happen considering the series as it is, but a possiblity. It’s fine if Kallen mentions it to Nunnally, but the crazy bitch assistant woman would go running to Suzaku.

  44. Lyzander says:

Rewatched the episode, and picked up on a rather hilarious detail (which I’m surprised DM missed).

When Lelouch disembarks at the aquarium, watch as Sayoko removes the mask and wig.

Sayoko is still wearing the maid-headband-thing underneath the wig!

    xD

  45. Scorpia says:

Nice episode, I kind of prefer more tension on the plotting and counter-plotting and the serious episodes, but the foreshadowing is not that bad. I wonder if all animes use the mysterious-ressurection power as twists. lol Cornelia
