More details on new Evangelion project

Rei
REI!!!

Either no one has bothered to blog about it or I didn’t look hard enough. So anyway, the latest issue of Newtype has a whole bunch of juicy titbits on the new Evangelion movies starting next year.

Click on to find out…

If you haven’t heard about the new Evangelion project before this, basically it’s a total of four new movies, with the first movie coming out next year.

I’ll just listen them out in the order they are mentioned in the magazine.

It’s going to be crazy. Crazy like the Eva that we love and hate. Apparently, Mr. Anno is working full steam. He’s happy that he can finally recreate Eva “as he wanted it to be”, because he’s no longer limited by the technology of 12 years ago, ergo lots of 3D CG this time. In fact, it’s so crazy that you will need to watch the first movie at least 3 times to “get” it. (Or so they say.)

The planning for the first movie has already been completed and it has entered the drawing phase and Mr. Hideaki Anno is working on the script for the second movie. The staff remains more or less the same as the TV series.

The first movie will revolve around the events covered in episode 6 of the TV series, basically Operation Yashima where Eva-01 takes down the angel with a positron rifle. That episode did not turn out the way Mr. Anno wanted it to, due to last-decade technical limitations, and he wants to make it right this time. Operation Yashima will be the climax of the first movie. Mr. Shinji Higuchi, the director of Sinking of Japan, will be in-charge of the Yashima portions of the movie.

NEW characters will be appearing in the second movie. (Please let it be Mana Kirishima!!!)

Although the uniform designs will remain unchanged, the NERV and SEELE logos will be changed. The NERV logo will be based on a bitten apple, while the new SEELE logo will be an apple with a serpent coiled around it. The new logos are references to the original sin as told by the Bible. Apparently, this reference may be paralleled by the movies’ story at some point.

It sounds to me that the first movie will be at least a partial remake and the second movie will branch off to a new story with new characters. I guess you can call it a parallel Eva universe?

As a fanboy, I can’t wait to see Eva with modern graphics. :3

P.S. Mana is the hawtest Eva girl. She deserves screen time!!!

Mana
MANA!!!

Hawtest eva girl over Rei? You are on crack! And bad crack!

  2. Julius Firefocht says:

Mana and Rei over Asuka? What blasphemy is this? Asuka>>>>>>Rei and Mana!

God-Empress save me, but I can feel my old Eva fanboyism coming back. It’s amazing, the sort of influence that a decade-old anime can still hold over a person.

  3. jpmeyer says:

Ooh, I want to see those new logos. Even though the original NERV logo is iconic, of course.

  4. kacpy says:

I hate all this ‘finally how I wanted to do it’ crap.

  5. Stripey says:

    >>Mr. Shinji Higuchi, the director of Sinking of Japan, will be in-charge of the Yashima portions of the movie

Haruhi-sama have mercy on us all.

  6. Soulshift says:

I’m not saying anything about the movies will turn out, but, the “make it the way I want to” statement made by Anno strongly echos the sentiments of George Lucas when he was creating the Star Wars prequels.

I’ll leave you to make your own judgments.

  7. Demian says:

And here I though those technical limitations were what made eva great. when you don’t have much animation you start getting artsy. ugh cg and eva just sound wrong in my mind.

  8. Danny says:

yes mana would be a nice addition but she is still no match for REI!!!

    ayanami-san T_T

  9. helspectre says:

Asuka is clearly the best. Suicide in empty tub ftw.

  10. quigonkenny says:

    >>>He’s happy that he can finally recreate Eva “as he wanted it to be”, because he’s no longer limited by the technology of 12 years ago, ergo lots of 3D CG this time.

    **shudder**

Visions of JarJar, overly busy CG effects, shoddy storytelling, and bad acting are all coming back to me… And Anno wasn’t exactly the most coherent storyteller to begin with…

  11. rikio says:

    >>>The NERV logo will be based on a bitten apple

Can you say apple lawsuit? Or maybe Anno is hinting at the true nature of Steve Jobs company?! ZOMG!

  12. felineki says:

Everyone knows Eva-01’s truly the hottest girl in the show.

  13. Kurogane says:

    >>What blasphemy is this? Asuka>>>>>>Rei and Mana!

    I agree.

Sounds very interesting. I’d blogged it if I knew about it… but blame Pangya! … damn golf is addictive.

  14. appolinaire says:

    Bitten apple… like Apple’s logo?

  15. Reichu says:

The George Lucas parallels are unsettling — although perhaps not entirely unexpected to the cynics among us. The words “I have a bad feeling about this…” began to dominate feelings of excitement and anticipation not long after factual scoops on “Rebuild” started to appear.

I anticipate that Pen^2 (2007-8) will actually speak and make many failed attempts at physical comedy. Overall, the new films will be made of flashiness, suck, and fail. Even if they aren’t, I doubt they will have the soul of the original.

  16. Brittany says:

This all sounds very interesting, though I pray to GOD that they won’t be putting Mana in the second movie. A new character would be interesting though; wasn’t that the one GAINAX was doing contests for over in Japan?

  17. SHINJI-KUN says:

    I LOVE YOU MANA!

    (sorry rei)

  18. Sailor Enlil says:

    >>>Can you say apple lawsuit? Or maybe Anno is hinting at the true nature of Steve Jobs company?! ZOMG!

You mean the Apple Records (the record company founded by the Beatles) vs Apple Computers series of lawsuits? (all started by the logo)
LOL on the “true nature” thing.

As for who’s the hottest girl, I’m afraid I concur with Darkmirage. Ever since I got to play the fansubbed version of NGE Girlfriend of Steel 2, I was completely smitten with Mana Kirishima. Though the new Rei Ayanami as seen in the manga (the bubbly and sometimes tsundere Rei) is getting my attention as well (perhaps if this Rei is what goes to the movies I’ll really check them out).

  19. exalt dragon says:

    ANGST! More shinji-existential-dispair-i-can’t-live-angst!!!!!

  20. Sherman, the Ramni says:

    Bitten apple!? zOMfG!!!11
    LOL
    That cracked me for sure.

  21. mutio says:

Yay for new EVA stuff! I was pretty disappointed by the last two episodes of the series and also the movies didn’t appeal to me.
So I especially hope for better endings and a better story in the new gen. EVAs. Also curious to see how they’re gonna to redesign the Evangelions with CG tech.

  22. Beowulf says:

    Wow… who is Mana…?

  23. andrew says:

thanks for the info-found u through evamonkey.

and asukas way hotter than that mana girl…

  24. More Pen Pen is necessary for this to work.

No talking, though. Pen Pen doesn’t do dialogue. He’s above it as a penguin.

  25. RVR says:

Sorry guys, but Rei is the best ^__^
    GoS 2 sucks -__-

  26. anon says:

well im just glad that this is happening. i like anno’s style. his eva and kare kano are among my fav. and i usually dont like love stories.

  27. DarkMirage says:

GoS 2 sucked, but GoS pwned. And that’s all that matters. :3

  28. Epi says:

LOL Where’d you get that Mana pic from? Did you like superimpose some ‘stuff’ on her or is that all real? :)

  29. anon says:

prob a beach scene. you dirty minded fella!

  30. t3h Dave says:

    I can’t wait! More Mana would be totally sweet too, but… the BITTEN APPLE? >>;;
I guess I’ve grown onto the Fig Leaf for so long that changing the logo sounds insane. Plus, I’m not a fan of Macs =\

Anyway, hoping to see Eva in brand spankin new badass animation! :D

  31. nae says:

I’m dead curious about the casting.

  32. Urishima says:

I hope that the new Character won’t be Mana.
I hate her. I mean, I REALLY hate her.

She comes, gets Shinji and Asuka gets away with nothing.
Don’t know who has made that game specificly, but he never understood Evangelion.

    But well, thats another Story.

And beside of the possibility, that Mana gets into the movies, I’m really exitet to see them.
If you ask me, the possibility is really low. Anno has his hands on it.

  33. teh_pwnerer Lalz says:

/me thinks that the movies will ruin the series!
i cant imagine something to be better then the series, it would probably such fake 3d animated n00b styled series:\

  34. John says:

I am seriously looking forward to any kind of evangelion film. Nice to hear some news about it as I can rarely find anything about it on the net. I’m excited already, great blog.

  35. Wintermuted says:

Well, for one thing. I read that Anno is merely taking a “supervising”position this time around, while his longtime understudy, Kazuya (FLCL) Tsurumaki will be directing. This is where my worries begin. While I love both FLCL,and Gunbuster 2,..they are very much Tsurumaki’s takes on what Anno has laid out.

Especially Gunbuster 2,…it works pretty far away from Anno’s seminal work, and is more “wacky”than introspective. Something that I fear greatly in dealing with these films.

Another tidbit worth mentioning is that in other news are the blurbs that these new films stand alone without viewes needing to know anything about the original series.(GoS suddenly rushes to mind) Even pachinko players will be able to understand this..so no deep religious references, or cryptic phrases..

I’m still eager…but I’m also being very cautious.

BUT…in many ways., I always considered the first GoS as being a “lost arc” of the series…especially in how Asuka & Shinji’s relationship develops from that story.

    Until then(crosses fingers)

  36. tonbo says:

hi and long time no see (online or otherwise),

thx for your synopsis of the Newtype writeup, which served to comfort me since i missed the issue, also thx to the evamonkey’s link, even tho i was there when the whole stack was laid out at kino not that long ago , all for lack of $$. good thing is, i finally got myself a new job at a comic rental store to regain a footing. so when the movies finally hit the screen, we could prolly all afford to see it in Tokyo together (perhaps)

i did get you a nice towel with sexy Saya & Diva on it frm Comic Market, but details will follow in due time… the house lost internet service while i was still in Tokyo in August, sigh ( for one )…

till next episode ( by zima )

  37. Morris Levy says:

Um, credibility? How do you know this? Who are you to tell us? And may I ask who is “Mana”. Research your stuff before you blab, idiot.

  38. Rutt says:

Ahh yes NGE, I remember it. I LOOVED it like hell when I watched it the first time. And I still love it.. I hope the movies are going to be great :3. And it would be cool if Mana would make a short apperance XD.

  39. bill seta says:

WHAT THE **** IS THIS “THE WAY I WANT TO DO IT” ITS THE BEST
****ING ANIME EVER AND HE WANTS TO CHANGE IT HE IS JUST WHORING IT OUT LIKE GEORGE LUCAS WITH STAR WARS ITS ALREADY PERFECT AND CHANGING THE NERV AND SEELE LOGOS IS JUST DUMB AS HELL

  40. H-fan says:

damnit bill seta of course its like george lucas but lets wait till it comes out theres a small chance that it MIGHT NOT SUCK i mean if you hate it than dont watch it and stick to your current eva dvds >.>

  41. DarkMirage says:

Um, credibility? How do you know this? Who are you to tell us? And may I ask who is “Mana”.

Research your stuff before you blab, idiot.

    Was the irony intentional? Mmmmmm…

Morris, please read the entry again. This time with your eyes open. kthx.

And as for Mana Kirishima, I’ll say it again: She’s the hawtest Eva girl. :3

  42. Wintermuted says:

What’s so cool about Kirishima Mana is that she’s pretty much a perfect combination of Asuka & Rei,which makes a great deal of sense in terms of compatibility with Shinji-kun.

I love that producer, Ohtsuki has stated that the current anime climate is rife with overplayed otaku junk as a result of EVA’s success. I also love that a big motivating factor toward making these is one of rejection of this current philosophy…After all..the original series was created as a rejection of anime cliches in the 90s.

    Full-circle…I like that.

  43. Adamantium_Jedi says:

Whoever is an Eva fan and did not enjoy the movie in the least is a crackpot. And I am sickened to hear that CG will be involved unless it will used to simply clean up animation shots somewhat. Any battles done in CG that turn out looking like *dare I say Vandread?* will ultimately ruin the anime we have all come to love. How it was done originally is something that keeps my memories of it nostalgic. Sure it wasn’t the best animation and I’ll be damned if the budget wasn’t large enough to fit such a great story, but it kept us all on the edge of our seats wanting more and when it finally ended with the two already existing movies we were all wiping the slobber from our faces as the credits began to roll. This is a timeless anime, with amazing characters, great musical compilations and unforgettable battle scenes. Let’s hope that these movies only add to this classic series and does not destroy it the same way George Lucas has destroyed his own with over the top special effects and horrible new characters. . . . .

  44. Squirrel says:

I couldn’t agree more with Adamantium_Jedi. Except for one thing, alot of anime now doesn’t compare to the animation in Evangelion. The traditional animation of Evangelion is beautiful and I feel CG has damaged the majority of the animes it is put into now a days. It is used as a shortcut moreso than an improvement over traditional animation.

I have very low expectations for these films. Evangelion is known by all true anime fans as a classic; it is timeless. Those films and series which are timeless should never be changed, ever. I’ll go see these films without a doubt and maybe they will be good, but Anno better seriously put his heart and soul into this just as he did with the original Eva. This can’t be a milking of a franchise, this has to be what Eva was; a personal piece.

Anno… please don’t screw this up.

  45. RockyJusushi says:

    Oh yeah

I can’t wait it! I’am sure that Anno will do it again.

  46. Blade Neko says:

OmFg I hope to god that Eva is not slaughtered…. >.

  47. Blade Neko says:

eep my comment died! lemme try again *uhem* Asukas hottest but Rei is the best.

  48. sean says:

wow, how can they do this…

CGI is FUKing PATHETIC, i swear i try watch an anime, the second i see cgi, i lost about 75% respect of it,

how can u have cartoon then boom CGI it looks so shit and unrealistic,

sigh… i think eva’s reputation is gonna go down the drain..

ANNO i respected you, but “how i wanted it to be” gee i lost faith now,

    also i feel like crying,

    and misato= owns rei/asuka/mana

  49. Wintermuted says:

Well.As for the CG..I believe this is the least of our worries.(The CGI work in Top Wo Nerae 2! Was wonderful, and still within the confines of what would make a GAINAX series worth it’s weight. It’s never distracting, and only serves the story.)

While I agree that it was the limits that set EVA apart from most series…It was also one of the most debilitating parts of the series. Many sources have said that Anno and crew had created themselves into a terible corner, and had no choice to end it the way they did.-And without that,it would probably just become another anime finale slug-fest.They made a wonderfully complex and exciting series into a disturbing character study by the end.

I’m of the belief that these films will represent the flip side to that. And I’m hopeful that it’ll show us an alternate vision without restraints of any kind. How this is to translate to us is anybody’s guess..But it is very important to know that this is much more Tsurumaki’s show now than Anno’s.

And they have very differing world views for teacher and protege.

Compare EVA to FLCL,and you may be surprised to see that they are essentially saying the same things…albeit in very different ways.

This is how I’ll approach these new films..With an open heart and mind.Anno’s Evangelion is one for the books.Nothing will change this. Now to see where the characters will take us next.
