I lived in Denmark for four months last year; it’s beautiful…but it can get boring, which why they head to Germany. Did you just stay on Saelland during your trip,or head to Jutland? Oh, and in Copenhagen could you see Sweden from the shore? I have heard you can on clear sunny days. It seems like money well-spent going there.

Due to Finland’s recent relations with Russia and the nature of The Cold War, Finland wanted to disassociate themselves with Russia and thus drew upon their historical ties with Scandinavia. However culturally and linguistic they were different from Denmark, Norway and Sweden and these countries don’t consider them Scandinavians. As for Iceland, they gained their independence during WW2, but is historically a colony and not a part of the original Scandinavia though it share more cultural and linguistic ties than Finland.

I love your pics of your Scandinavian trip. I haven’t been there yet but would like to travel there at some point. I really like the novels that come out of those countries i.e. Stieg Larsson and the Kurt Wallender mystery books.

I felt awed all the time, after you climbed up a mountain you found yourself on a plateau, that seemed to stretch to the horizon. Kind of magical, and you just knew were all the myths and legends are coming from.

A few smiles as I recall myself taking those exact same photos. Beautiful countries, hella expensive.

Funnily enough I also walked into that bookstore.

I have yet to go to Norway, hoping to cross that off this winter.

It’s complicated apparently, but you are actually agreeing with my original point since I don’t care for the complications either. (Which is why I titled this post Scandinavia)

I don’t think I was really being negative, except for maybe Helsinki. I didn’t like Helsinki as much. Helsinki feels more Eastern European while the other cities feel more cheery. Still even then most of the “negativity” is just part of my eternal struggle to showcase my imaginary wit.

DJd: This trip was a family trip before I leave for the US. My last 3-week trip to Japan cost about 2000 USD excluding airfare. Most of the cost when into the 600-USD JR pass I used to take Shinkansen everywhere.

Finland is as much part of Scandinavia as Indonesia is of Australia. I found your “report” very negative indeed. Perhaps you were expecting Disneyland?
