She does not play a good yuki mori. Yuki is soft and gentle and not a fighter pilot. Dr sado is a small funny man and gamilions are Blue people led by the awesome leader Desslock or Dessler if your prefer. The Yamato isnt based on it is the battleship yamato rebuilt out of the wreck Starsha of iscandar is a hot chick not an Asexual crystal entity. This movie is complete crap. Stay far away and watch the original.

I just watched the movie, and yes, I am an avid Kimutaku fan, and I do watch a lot of Jdrama, so I know where all the cheese and the overacting is coming form but I agree with everything said above.

It’s true that this movie was made for Japanese audineces first, but then they upped it to 3D and have been hoping it will be picked up for international release – I think most international audiences, especially those not from Asia, will not know what to make of it. Which is sad.
I placed a lot of expectation on it, hioping to see a real block buster to make my favorite japanese actor international star, but it turned ot to be just a another sample of the Jdrama type with some special effects – which would have been great if that was what I expected…

Anyway, I myself didn’t know of the anime but I did research on it after watching the movie. Then, i came to realize that I wasn’t able to appreicate it first because I didn’t know the plot itself.

True enough it’s made for the Japanese audience, so, if I were you, stop judging the movie… if you don’t feel the movie, don’t watch it.

I watched it because of Takuya Kimura… I don’t see any reason why you needed to watch it ‘coz no. 1, you’re not a Kimura Takuya fan and no. 2 you’re not a Space Battleship yamato fan… so why bother?

your criticism is just too wordy I don’t know what you’re talking about. *lol*

If you don’t like the original anime……why would you watch the live action version? Oh wait……to slam it.

Keep in mind though, that this is what Japanese audiences actually want. The overacting is a form of escapism, since noone in Japans (relatively) repressed society gets to act or talk that way. Plus the ladies apparently loved it.

I also agree that the SFX needed more budget and longer shots. Oh and more external shots of the ship. Whats there did the trick alright though imo.

As for the rest of your criticisms – well it makes a lot more sense if you are familiar with the source material. This incarnation blends elements of the first two and then streamlines it to fit within a movie length timeframe. As such a lot of the details are cut but remember – the Japanese audience already knows these details. Yamato is a national institution – the story is already known. Heck, when he heard I’d seen the movie (and visited Leiji Matsumoto, but thats another story altogether ;-) my boss pulled off a Yamato Crew salute which he suddenly remembered from having watched the show as a child! Does this excuse poor film making? No. But keep in mind that the film was made with a Japanese audience first and foremost in mind.

Personally I found it to be a fun romp with some great winks to old skool fans (like the original voice actor coming back to do Analyzer). But maybe, much like with the recent movie Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell, its the fans who really get the most out of this sort of film.
