You can find English signs and most people understand simple English words if you try to make them sound like they were spelt with katakana.

Out in the smaller cities and rural areas, even the train route maps feature no English. Then you had better be at least capable of remembering and differentiating between many sets of two-kanji place names. lol.

Reading this one really gave me an extra urge to visit Japan now that I know that I could visit places that were featured in one of my favorite animes. How fluent in Japanese should someone be to travel there?

That is a place I’d like to visit.

It’s the abundance of Eva merchandise at (almost) every single gift shop that provides the reminder.

Actually, the Nipponbashi main road does have a few more major stores like Volks showroom, a Joshi speciality Gundam store (marked with a large 2/3 scale poster outside) and an excellent Super Position (for 2nd hand figures, gashopons and other goods) as well as the K-books you mention. But as you say, most of the good stuff is on the parallel road behind. I particularly love the Cospa store – expensive, but always full of cool merchandise (^-^)
