By: the industrial, rather than ethical issues involved in that whole wind debacle at 見ないで! DarkMirage had brought up how fan translations are similar to what fansubs were like waaaaaay back in the day and brings up the same old argument that fansubs get people interested who would otherwise never know. The problem here, however, is that this doesn’t take into account just what the audience for these games is. When I was at New York Comic Con, I talked to the representatives from Hirameki about the visual novel industry, both in Japan and America. The first thing that they brought up was that these games are all extremely niche even in Japan. People frequently bring up the example of Shingetsu Tsukihime, but without taking into account the hugely anomalous nature of that game. Tsukihime is the best-selling visual novel computer game, selling over 100,000 copies. It could possibly have sold even more if it had a larger print run, as the game is out of print and extremely difficult to find a copy of. I’ve seen headlines on Japanese anime news blogs when people have been able to find a single used copy of the game in a hole-in-the-wall Akihabara computer game shop. Most games, however, only sell a few thousand. At the same time, the market is totally saturated. Hundreds of these games come out every year. Can you even think of say, one hundred FPS or RTS games? If you look at a site like Heisei Democracy that has visual novel/eroge coverage, you can see how many of these come out every week. […]

God bless you. I agree whole heartily. As illegal as it is, it only helps the market.

It’s a case of misinformation on my part but I would like to mention this because of the wording of the NNL’s site that led me to thinking of that and the fact that the entry above was saying that I was making a rash judgement.. >_>

The patch will be release to the public 3 weeks from 6-29. I think it is the best decision they have made. The change will allow fans who will never get to play the game, to play it, as well as broading their scope of audience, which was tattering around 4 people out of 14 appliers, unless one of the person given the patch leaks it.

DarkMirage, true to his idealistic claims, has dumped his #SEKAIWOOOINIMORIAGERUTAMENOSUZUMIYAHARUHINODAN rant against No Name Losers’ strange move to severely restrict distribution of the wind ~a breath of heart english patch here. I assure you …

Rash judgements +1… Ever consider the more internally-consistent conclusion? They were exempt from taking the test to prove they owned the game because NNL already knew them well enough to know they did own it. I mean, honestly, think for a moment… why would they post something on their own site that’d be blatently contradictory? If I’m standing right next to you with the game in hand, you’re still going to make me take a test to prove it’s legit? Exempt from the test, not from the purchase.

As far as “not that I see eroge as porn.. but it’s hard not to take away the rather obvious links between those two”, one of their achievements in the patch was to provide an install mode that removed all the ero-content from the main storyline. This is something that even minori themselves didn’t do in the PC version, and blurs the line even further. If the story, mediocre though it may be, can stand alone without any ero content, then maybe the “links” aren’t quite so obvious.

Anyway, not that I need to defend the people who made the patch; they can certainly defend themselves (and their updated statements on their sites certainly do that, even if I don’t agree with absolutely everything within). But, I will say this… as one of the “three people” mentioned in the original blog entry, the reaction of the “fan community” has been a lot more aggravating than anything NNL may have required as proof. Whether piracy will do more help than harm, I really don’t know. But that certain “fan communities” would take up arms to try to stop some “perceived injustice” is insane. We’ll see where things go from here.
