We had previously reported that Peru was planning to expand its Una laptop por niño to reach all of its primary schools as well as start introducing OLPC's XO-1.5 HS machines to the country's secondary schools.
Soon to be a universal sight
Now via an article in Peru's Andina news agency Oscar Becerra, the head of DIGETE - the Peruvian Ministry of Education's department which runs Una laptop por niño - shared more information about these plans.
He explained that by July 2011 Peru plans to have distributed a total of 810,000 XOs in its public primary and secondary schools. This will make Una laptop por niño by far the largest OLPC project followed by Uruguay's Plan Ceibal which aims to have a total of approximately 500,000 XOs in the hands of pupils by 2011.
It sounds like similarly to Uruguay pupils in Peru's secondary schools will also receive OLPC's XO-1.5 HS machines which come with a normal keyboard as opposed to the membrane keyboard found on the XO-1 / XO-1.5 machines (see our hands-on article for more thoughts about the XO-1.5 HS).
In related news another recent article on the Web site of Los Andes mentions that 400 teachers will be the first Peruvian XO users to receive an upgrade to Sugar 0.88.
