Ritsuko had explained it was something with Adrenaline, LCL and periphal blood pressure, but Shinji always forgot these abstract things. He currently lied in a hospital bed. They just checked him, treated his scratches and ensured he was okay. Rei was just guided in by a nurse. Her wounds didn't seem to be severe. The fifth had angel destroyed most of Eva-00, but luckily Rei survived almost unhurt. She seemed as always, closed and cold. But then she looked up. As their eyes met, Shinji saw again a little smile flash across her face. She said down on the bed next to his. "Hey." Shinji said. "How are you?" "Don't worry. I'm okay." He waited until the nurse was gone. "Did you think I would worry?" Rei raised her head. She looked at him, with her usual neutral expression on the face. "Yes." She said. She seemed astounded by her own words. "Strange." She judged her thoughts. "You know I would worry. Don't you?" She nodded. "I think... I would worry if you were hurt, too." She looked down again. "Really? Do you know you would be the only one?" "Misato would too." "Misato doesn't count. She's my commanding officer. It's her duty to worry about me." They were silent for a while. "Why did you tell me that?" Rei asked. "I don't know. I think you should know... Know I would worry about you... Just in the case..." Rei still looked down. But Shinji felt she wanted to say something. "..." She started, but cut her words. Then she said it. "It feels good. Having someone who worries." "Rei?" "Huh?" "You just said, it feels good. That was the very first time you spoke about your feelings." "..." He felt he had hit some nerve. Rei looked as neutral as ever, but he could tell anyway. "It... just... came. I didn't think about it." "Are you apologizing?" "No... why should I? I'm just feeling good about it. It's so strange." "To feel good?" "No. Just... to feel... something. Even the word sounds strange." She constated. Shinji wondered once again why Rei was like she was. But he decided not to ask. He wanted not to break up wounds. He wanted her to live. Rei sunk in her thoughts. Shinji felt she was going back to her normal Rei-mode. He didn't want her to. "Don't you wonder why you feel good?" he asked softly. Rei woke up from her thoughts. She seemed now to explore her feelings. Shinji could see on her face something was going on in her. "Tell me what you think." he said. "I want to share your thoughts." Rei turned away from him. "No." she said. "I.. can't tell you... They're my thoughts... not your buisiness..." There it was again. Now she was in Rei-Mode. So introverted, covering her feelings in a shield of harshness. Shinji felt pity of her. The remaining minutes, before Shinji was brought out, none of them said a word. Rei still was hiding her face. She knew Shinji would be able to see how the thoughts spinned in her head. *** It was late at night, when Shinjis Organizer beeped. It wouldn't stop, so he stood up, took the device out of his shirt's pocket and flipped it open. "Priority Message" stood there. He keyed in his mantra and waited for the radio system to download the message. "Shinji. I will be at your door at 2:00 straight. I have to speak to you. It's important. Rei." She had signed with her first name. Unusual for her. Shinji looked at the clock. 1:53. He waited the seven minutes, standing, so that he couldn't sleep in, and then went quietly to the door. Rei was outside. "Ssssh." he said. "Don't wake Misato. Come in." They sneaked to his room. Shinji closed the door behind them. "Now we can talk." he said with a low voice. Rei just stood there. She seemed to seek for words. "I... still don't realize..." she said. Shinji looked at her with a puzzled look. "Please be clear." he said. "I'm tired." "I can't get my feelings straight." She said. She sounded dispaired. "They... run around... and... they won't become clear." "Rei. That's okay for feelings. They are supposed to be that way." "But... I don't know what to do..." "Yes, you know. You came here." She looked at him. "You're right. I came here... But I don't know why..." "Maybe because I care for you? Did you want me to tell you you're alright?" "Maybe that. But also... because I care for you." She looked down again. "Hey, no reason for shame." "It's just... I don't know what it is... I feel so strange... It's so strong..." She almost cried. "Hey, hey... Alright, Rei... Don't cry..." She shook her head. Then she looked at him. She almost looked like everytimes. But now, there was something in her eyes Shinji had never seen before. She opened her mouth, as if to say something, but then she embraced Shinji and kissed him. Shinji was caught totally off guard. At first, he didn't realize anything. Then he realized fully. And then, Rei jumped back. She turned around. "Sorry." she said. "Don't know what..." she cut her words. "Better go..." Shinji jumped in her way. "Please... don't leave..." She turned away from him again. "I... don't know what..." she started again. "It's okay. Hey, Rei. It's okay. I'm not angry." "You didn't want it..." "My... Rei, you just were a bit fast... See, I like you very much, but I never thought of... you know... That's not very decent to think of a friend..." "So... you want it, too?" "Of course, Rei. You just were... so cold these last weeks. I didn't know you had feelings this strong inside of you." "I didn't know, too." "See, now we both know." They kissed again. This time, more softly. "Hey..." Shinji said. "You're blushing..." Rei looked down. She covered her face, looked up at shinji smiling. Like a perfectly normal girl. In this moment, Shinji realized she was in fact a normal girl. Perfectly normal. He felt the blood rush to his head. "What are you doing to me?" he asked. Rei shrugged. "I don't know myself." They kissed again. This time, Shinji touched Rei's hips softly. She seemed so warm, so soft. "Mmm..." Rei sighed. "Thats..." she kissed him again. "Hey..." she sounded like out of breath. "Thats... oh..." she blushed even more. "Hey, now you're doing something to me." She touched his shoulders, put her head on his breast. "Just hold me for a while... Oh Shinji..." Shinji held her. For this moment, he was the luckiest boy in the world. "Hey..." Rei said, as if she just had an idea. Shinji noted a tone in her voice he never heard in hers. In fact, he had never heard it live. Rei touched his neck, traced his chin with her fingernails, and then... started to unbutton his pajama. "Grk." Shinji said. He sounded nervous. He tried to conceal a certain tension in his loins by tensing every muscle in his body. "Ssssh." Rei didn't want to disturb it. "Just be quiet, okay?" She asked. "And relax... Nothing can happen... I'm here... I'll protect you..." She sounded more sure than she felt. She kissed him again. A single time, Rei just wanted to be a normal girl. Then they just let it happen. *** Shinji woke up. Rei laid still in his arms. She was so soft, so fragile. He smelled her hair once more. So perfect. Rei woke up slowly. He looked at him with her spooky, red eyes. For a moment he thought that old Rei was back. "Hey." she said softly. "Thank you for everyting." "Thank /you/" Shinji answered. They warmed each other some minutes. They didn't talk. They needed no words. Not now. "I think i'll take a shower." "It's next door." She got up. She really looked fragile. Shinji followed the curves of her body with his eyes. She picked up her clothes and left without turning around. He noticed a trace of dried, brown-red blood on her porcelain white leg. Misato was just reading the newspaper when she heard Shinji's door. She looked up and almost dropped her beer can. She waited a bit. Then she put down the newspaper and counted the empty cans on the table. Then she stood up and got to shinji's room. Shinji was lying in his bed. His hair was a mess. "Shinji???" she asked with trembling voice. "Huh?" "Errr????" "What?" Shinji looked up. Misato looked like she had seen a ghost. She pointed behind her back with a shaking hand. She didn't even notice her Kimono was wider open than her mouth. "???" she asked. "Yes, that was Rei." "..." "Hey, what's up. It's our buisiness." "!" Misato turned around, drank her beer and got a new one. ______ Just wrote it for fun. I know, the hunderedth Shinji/Rei story, know it all, blah, etc... I just seeked for a possibility to bring the two together that isn't that posed (you know, all these hormonal imbalance/posession of evil spirits/plain horniness stories we all know). I think, deep inside of her Rei really wants to be normal. (Note: I know only up to Manga Ep. 19. I live in Germany and have to wait for the german translations since imported Mangas are painfully high-priced. Please don't spoil me of anything important.) I think, Rei just misses love and some hugs, the only thing that makes humans grow. I think Rei is the most interesting Charakter in Evangelion. She is also a good MacGuffin (What is she? Why is she like she is? etc., such questions give life to a story, and the objects of these questions are called MacGuffins, according to Hitchcock.). Shinji's interesting, too, but he's too transparent to be /really/ interesting. Misato... well, she's not really. Too few conflicts. If she was secretly in love with Shinji or such a thing, that would make her more attractive. Gendo Ikari is again more interesting, but is not a real central character (until now?). Maybe Rei got pregnant and we all get a second part. That was a threat ;-) Naw, I think my next story will be about Misato. Basti
