And now, it is only completed on this day, June 26, 1999. The delay relates heavily to what it was - it was a piece I kept to during school hours only. When I had the time, and felt the desire to write, I simply did. This small piece was written over the span of two months - interesting, isn't it? Meanwhile, it is only out now because only tonight did I decide to type, and subsequently revise, the piece for a standard I deemed fit for publication. One major example of revision would be the title - "The Voice of Humanity" sounded too much like "The Evangel of Humanity", thus I renamed it with the same meaning intact. Another piece to add to my growing collection of poetry. I haven't written a poem for a number of months now, but I guess doing one over a period of two months does mean I've been at it for some time. It's not too long, nor is it too short. It's... adequate, would be the word. This is placed within the continuity of Third Impact, and intends to convey a natural collective thought that humans would have toward Shinji Ikari. "If one kid decided everyone should die, how would you feel?" Whether you agree with it or not, letting someone, especially with the qualities of young Ikari, decide your fate, is not the most heartening of thoughts, and I doubt is the desire of many. This piece assumes that leading a pre-determined life is an atrocity. Whether it actually is or not is beyond the scope (and intention) of this poem. Comments and criticisms are warmly welcomed, while flames will be put out with the electronic equivalent of water. Read with great care, and with an open heart and mind. Until the next time, ja na. - James Grabowski __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ Humanity's Voice ------------------------------------ Are you happy with what you've done? You have made us one. You have made us whole. You have made us complete. You have purified the world of sin. You have purified the world of evil. You have purified the world of life. ...And... you don't care, do you. Selfish. Conceited. Vile. Lonely. All you care about is yourself, And we die, almighty God, in your name. The great Shinji Ikari, given the choice of life, And for his pain, gave unto us the plague of death. Have you ever cared for anyone? Have you ever looked for anyone? Have you ever loved anyone? If so, it was all in your selfish pride. Those who loved you most, You ran away from them, in ignominy. Those who you loved most, You ran away from, in false rejection. Rei Ayanami - First Children. You know that name; it's a part of who you are. Red-eyed girl, calm, quiet, emotionless, Uninterested in life, but concerned for you. She forfeited her life so you could have yours, Because of the feelings she had for you. And when her secret became known to you, You ran if fear... heartless coward. What did she do to you to deserve that? She saved your life. She comforted you. She smiled for you, for no one other. Her life was false, this hell her purpose, And she gave it to you to control. Together you are the Adam and Eve of the Third Impact, And even now, you're still hiding in disdainful shame. Asuka Langley Sohryuu - Second Children. You know that name; it's a part of who you are. Blue-eyed girl, restless, loud, brimming with life, Hating it all, yet wishing to live. She fought while you cowered in a corner, Because of the passion for life she had. And when she rejected your poisoned promises, You ran in fear... desecrator. What did she do to you to deserve that? She teased you. She confused you. She was a friend to you, to no other boy. Her life was manufactured, to pilot her purpose, And she fought to save the lives of those who desired life. Together you were true power - confused, compassionate friendship, And even now, you realize you can't have lies forged from fear. Touji Suzuhara - Fourth Children. You know that name; it's a part of who you are. Dark-skinned boy, powerful, obnoxious, considerate, Living care-free, but devoted to his loves. He piloted to protect those he cared for, Because of the compassion welled up inside him. And when his true identity became known to you, You ran in fear... berserker. What did he do to you to deserve that? He befriended you. He cared for you. He regarded your interests differently, unlike any other. His life was pure freedom, to live his purpose, And he gave his body to unite his soul. Together you were the same, you were different, you were strong, And even now your anger boils, and you realize, "Where is he?" Kaworu Nagisa - Fifth Children. You know that name; it's a part of who you are. Red-eyed boy, caring, friendly, strong, A love of life, a lover of you. He forfeited his life so humanity could survive, Because of the love he felt for you. And when his secret became known to you, You ran in fear... murderer. What did he do to you to deserve that? He was kind to you. He listened to you. He loved you. He was an Angel, to return to the beginning his purpose, And he sacrificed his eternal life for you to take. Together you were the epitome of true humanity, And even now, you are struggling with regret. Misato Katsuragi, Major. Ritsuko Akagi, Doctor. Gendou Ikari, Commander. You know those names; they are a part of who you are. Yet you reject them, And you destroy them, And you hurt them. But why? Because you blame them for your pain. Who is Misato? What is Misato? A friend, a lover, a mother. Who is Ritsuko? What is Ritsuko? A doctor, a patron, a giver. Who is Gendou? What is Gendou? A creator, a destroyer, a father. Even those whom you mistrust hold you in high regard, And even now, you reject them. Coward! Deceiver! Destroyer! Despoiler! Ruiner! Breaker! Swindler! Annihilator! Running away once more? "Yes." "Yes he is, idiot!" "Yes, he and his pride which have destroyed everybody!' "Yes, he chose the future for himself." "Yes, it's unsurprising." "Yes, his behaviour indicated that decision." "Yes. He failed. I apologize for putting this choice upon him." "..." They all speak for you. Are you happy with what you've done? You have made us one. You have made us whole. You have made us complete. You have purified the world of sin. You have purified the world of evil. You have purified the world of life. ...And... you don't care, do you.
